Central Holds Off Chandler-Gilbert in Game One; Eight Extra Base Hits Fuel Game Two Win

You can almost consider a double header at Chandler Gilbert Community College a local game.

It's the closest away field for Central Arizona College in ACCAC play at about a 45 minute drive from Coolidge.

That's close in these parts. It might explain why the almost full seating at Coyote Stadium seemed half CGCC and half CAC fans.

Game one of the DH saw Vaquero starter Mat Olsen throw a perfect first four innings as Central creeped into a 3-0 lead.

"He got back to the dugout after the three-run fifth inning..." said head Coach Anthony Gilich.

"...he sat down on the bench and focused and came back with a zero in the sixth."

CGCC put together a three-run inning with a few walks and a few hits and scraped back to within 5-3 in that fifth.

It was Kiko Romero who doubled in two runs to right center to give Central a 5-0 lead in the top of the fifth.

In the bottom of the seventh, Drew Sommers came in with the 5-3 lead and faced five batters, giving up one hit, walked one, and gave up his first earned run of the year yet preserved the lead and got the save.

Coyotes starting pitcher Tyler Valdez kept Central fairly quiet in his six innings.

That's hard to do.

-Central starter Mat Olsen delivers in second inning Saturday.

After winning game one 5-4 to go to 27-0 on the year, Central gave up three runs to Chandler-Gilbert in the bottom of the first and caught up in the third when they tied the game at three.

Offensive fisticuffs ensued and it was 9-7 with Central ahead after five innings.

With a 5-3 lead going into the the top of the fifth inning, Matt Aribal ripped one out of right field for a two-out grand slam to put CAC up 9-3.

With a four-run Coyotes answer in the bottom of the fifth, the score was 9-7, and the Vaqueros added five more runs while Chandler-Gilbert stopped answering.

Central relievers Shane Spencer and Cristian Sanchez threw the last five innings while striking out ten CGCC batters in relief of Daniel Davila and Central sweeps the double-header with a 14-7 win.

Preston Godfrey and JD McLaughlin also hit homeruns for Central, and Romero, DH Hayden Seldomridge, Jake Jarvis, and Vinnie Lagatta all doubled.

The first four batters for Central collected nine hits amongst themselves.

Central Arizona College has now won the first 28 games of the season.

And while nobody asked about this winning streak...if they did...the answer would be "still work to do" or something of that nature and you can take that one to the bank.
