Arizona Western splits conference doubleheader with Chandler-Gilbert

YUMA, Ariz. – The No. 12 ranked Arizona Western College Matadors Baseball team (19-6, 9-5) split an ACCAC doubleheader with Chandler-Gilbert (14-7, 8-6) on Tuesday afternoon in Chandler, Ariz., winning game one 4-0 before falling 12-2 in eight innings in game two.

Carlos Uribe tossed seven shutout innings for the Matadors in the opener, allowing just four hits and striking out six batters in the complete game win.

The game was scoreless until the fifth inning when Jahzeel Groetalaers doubled down the left field line scoring the first run of the game, giving the Matadors the 1-0 lead.

Sergio DeCello added insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning, smacking a two-out, three-run double to push the Matadors' lead to 4-0.

The win in game one of the doubleheader was the Matadors' fourth consecutive win.

The two teams traded scoreless innings until the third inning when the Coyotes opened the scoring in the second game, scoring three runs on a homer to grab the lead.

Chandler-Gilbert built the lead with two runs in the fifth inning and another in the sixth to extend the lead to 6-0.

Arizona Western got the bats going in the eighth inning and cut the deficit to 6-2 thanks to a Robert Miranda two-run single. Chandler-Gilbert pulled away in the bottom half of the inning, scoring six runs and ending the game early on a sacrifice fly.

The Matadors return home on Saturday, March 9, hosting Scottsdale in an ACCAC doubleheader beginning at Noon at Walt Kammann Baseball Field.
