GiGi Garcia powers Arizona Western Softball to a split with Coyotes

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western College Lady Matadors Softball team (17-11, 9-3) battled back from a game-two deficit to earn a split on the road at Chandler-Gilbert (11-10, 7-8) on Saturday afternoon, falling 7-6 in game one before taking game two 10-8.

Mollie Forbes went 2-for-4 with a home run and two runs batted in and Jayleen Espinoza also had a pair of this at the Lady Matadors fell in the opener 7-6.

The Matadors took the lead in the second inning in game one, scoring a run on a Natalie Gonzalez sacrifice fly and a MacKenzie Barney single.

After Chandler-Gilbert got on the board in the third inning, Forbes gave the Lady Matadors a 4-1 lead with a two-run homer. The Coyotes scored three runs in the fourth to tie the game at 4-4 before the Lady Matadors grabbed the lead back on an RBI single from Madison Morgan.   

Chandler-Gilbert Scored two runs in the fifth before the Lady Matadors picked up a run on a Valerie Joaquin ground out. The Coyotes took the lead for good with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

GiGi Garcia picked up three hits, going 3-for-4 with a home to help the Lady Matadors to a 10-8 win in game two.

The Lady Matadors took the lead in the first inning with a run before Chandler-Gilbert matched that total in its half of the first inning. The Coyotes scored four runs in the third inning and added to their lead with another run in the fourth to open up a 6-1 advantage.

The Lady Matadors scored two runs in the fifth inning on an Espinoza homer and added four more in the sixth, two of which came on an Espinoza double. Chandler-Gilbert got a run back in the sixth inning before Garcia smashed a three-run homer to put the Lady Matadors in front in the seventh inning.

The Lady Matadors are back on the road on Tuesday, March 26, heading to Phoenix to take on the GateWay Geckos in an ACCAC doubleheader beginning at Noon.
