No. 3 SMCC Softball Continues to Roll with Sweep of CGCC

The No. 3 South Mountain Community College softball team (42-7, 36-4 ACCAC) defeated Chandler-Gilbert CC 11-3 (6 innings) and 10-0 (5) in an ACCAC road doubleheader on April. 18. Sophomore Makaiya Gomez and freshman Brianna Garcia homered in each victory, and freshman Angelica Tello and sophomore Anisa Reynolds combined to limit the Coyotes to one earned run over 11 innings in the circle. 

Game One Recap

SMCC trailed 2-1 after an inning and responded with two in the second, three in the third, one in the fourth and four in the sixth to post the run-rule victory. 

Freshman Vanessa Philpot led the Cougars with three hits and added two runs and two RBIs. Gomez went 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBIs, a double and her 18th home run of the season. Garcia hit her 25th home run of the year and finished 2-for-2 with two runs, two walks and an RBI. 

Sophomore Annalise Chavez roped a triple, scored a run and had two RBIs, and Reynolds went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Sophomore Jessica Gordon and freshmen Sarah Potter and MIa Franco scored a run. 

Tello improved to 14-1 on the season with a complete-game performance in the circle. She struck out six Coyotes and worked around seven hits and a walk. 

Game Two Recap 

SMCC rolled to its 21st straight victory with a run in every inning and multiple runs in three frames. 

Gordon led the Cougars with three hits, including a double, and added a run, a stolen base and two RBIs. Gomez blasted her 19th home run of the season and finished 2-for-4 with two runs, four RBIs and a stolen base. 

Garcia hit her team-leading 26th home run of the season and went 2-for-3 with a run, two RBIs and a walk. Freshman Iliana Munoz hit a pair of doubles and posted two runs and two RBIs, and freshman Halle Hogan had a double. 

Reynolds allowed one hit over five innings to record her 14th win. She fanned three and did not walk a batter. Offensively, Reynolds drew two walks, stole two bases and scored two runs.
