YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western College Matadors Baseball team (9-1) split a doubleheader with Chandler-Gilbert (5-1) on Saturday afternoon, winning game one 7-4 before falling in game two 11-3 at Walt Kammann Baseball Field.
Ismael Cordoba struck out five batters over five scoreless innings in game one while Robert Miranda went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored in the Matadors' ninth win in a row.
The Matadors opened the scoring in the first inning, sending nine batters to the plate and scoring four runs. Bronson Neave put the Matadors in front with a single that scored Miranda before Taehyung Kim brought home the second run of the inning with a single. Marcus Graham made it a four-run inning with a two-run double to cap off the scoring.
Neave drove in his second run of the game with a groundout in the second inning and Miranda knocked in the sixth Matadors' run in the third with a single to left scoring Carl Sullivan. The Matadors got their seventh run of the game in the fourth on a wild pitch.
Chandler-Gilbert smacked a grand slam in the seventh to trim the final margin to three runs.
The Coyotes opened game two with a three-run first inning and never looked back, scoring another run in the fourth to push the lead to 4-0.
The Matadors trailed 7-0 before scoring their first run of the game to cut the deficit to 7-1. Arizona Western got to within four runs at 7-3 but the Coyotes scored the final four runs of the game to earn the split.
The Matadors are back in action on Tuesday, February 13 hosting South Mountain in a doubleheader beginning at Noon at Walt Kammann Baseball Field.
