PUMAS ELIMINATED FROM PLAYOFFS

The best-of-three series came down to the if game Saturday between PVCC and Chandler-Gilbert. Both teams fighting to advance to the final round of the Region 1 tournament made for an exciting afternoon at the yard. The Pumas stayed in it until the end, but CGCC ultimately pulled away late taking a 10-4 victory and punching their ticket to the next round of playoffs.

Tied 1-1 after the first, PVCC captured a 2-1 lead in the second inning when Drew Kaatz singled on a 2-1 count, scoring one run. Putting two up in the third, and with the Coyotes answering with only one run the same inning, the Pumas held onto a 4-2 lead through six.

With CGCC batting in the bottom of the seventh, they tied it up at 4-4. The tide changed for the Pumas when they struggled to contain the high-powered Coyote offense, giving up six more runs and falling behind 10-4.

Jackson Brenna led things off on the pitcher's mound for the Pumas. The southpaw went five innings, allowing two runs on six hits and striking out two. Liam O'Brien, Tomas Urbina and Connor Dougal entered the game in relief. The bullpen gave up 10 hits for eight runs combined.

The Pumas tallied 13 hits. Gavin Acosta, Cole Williams, Carson Craig, and Kaatz each managed multiple hits. Kaatz, Craig, Williams, and Acosta all collected two hits to lead the Pumas.
