Chandler, Arizona-- Jon Watson has officially been named the new Head Baseball Coach at Chandler Gilbert College! Watson will be taking over for longtime coach Russell Luce who has transitioned to a new role as Athletic Director at Chandler Gilbert College.
Watson, who grew up in Mesa, Arizona, played two seasons at ACCAC rival South Mountain Community College before earning a Division 1 scholarship to the University of New Orleans where he competed for two seasons while earning a Bachelors Degree in Human Performance and Health Promotion.
Following his playing career, Watson made stops at multiple levels of baseball including three different high school coaching positions within The Valley, seven years at Chandler Gilbert College as an Assistant Baseball Coach and one season with the Los Angeles Angels in the Minor Leagues. Watson brings a wealth of knowledge to the program and could not be more excited to be returning to the Coyote program. Watson said, "It has been a dream of mine for a long time to be a head college baseball coach and I'm so thankful to CGCC for giving me that opportunity. I cannot wait to get out on the field next season and continue to build upon the great tradition Russell Luce built here for so many years."
Athletic Director Russell Luce said, "Hiring Jon Watson was a no brainer due to his incredible experience within the sport and his commitment to this program throughout his life. I'm confident he will do an incredible job elevating our program to new heights."
Watson and his team will begin workouts soon in hopes of making another run at the post season come next Spring.
