Women's Soccer to Make Playoff Run

Women's Soccer to Make Playoff Run

Chandler, AZ-- In the final regular season home match of the season, an 8-2 victory for the Coyotes over the visiting South Mountain College Cougars, the Women's Soccer team will advance to the ACCAC Region 1 playoffs. This is new head Coach Scott Smith's first season at the helm of the Coyotes, and to produce a winning record of 8-7 and a playoff birth is quite the feat. Although Coach Smith has been associated with the team for many seasons, this is his first full season taking over complete control. The Women's Soccer program has been through much transition in the past couple of years, dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, an abbreviated spring season, a coaching change and the ever changing post-pandemic recruiting landscape, among other things. Despite these challenges, Coach Smith has persevered and, with the help of some outstanding sophomores, turned this team into a winner.

Angelia Lucero, Michelle Munoz and Mellysa Galiz are three sophomores who have all started every game this season and lead the way for the Coyotes. Galiz and Munoz have a combined 10 goals between them. Mia Romero, has started every game she has played in and has been a tremendous vocal leader for the team as well. It has been a total team effort for the Coyotes this season. The 8-7 record might not look like anything over an average slightly above .500 record, but in this conference where three teams are nationally ranked within the top 10 in the country, every night is a tough game.
