Bears and Coyotes battle down to the Wire

Chandler, Arizona-- The Phoenix College Bears came to the Coyote Center Saturday night to play against the host Coyotes and both the Men's and Women's basketball teams battled down to the final seconds.

In the first game of the evening, the Men's basketball game needed two overtimes to decide a winner as two very evenly matched teams went head to head. The Coyotes eventually fell 96-93. Phoenix College hit a clutch three pointer off of a broken play to tie the game at the end of regulation, sending the game into overtime. At the end of overtime, Kasey Ruiz of CGCC tipped in an offensive rebound to once again tie the game and send it into another extra period. Phoenix College hit another clutch three after an offensive rebound with four seconds to go to put themselves up three and CGCC was not able to tie the game after that. Kasey Ruiz lead CGCC with 20 points, Cesar Saenz of Phoenix College lead all scorers with 30 points.

The Women's game that followed was not without its fair share of drama either. Down two points with less than a minute left, Mya Johnson of CGCC was fouled on her way to the basket and hit the two proceeding free throws to tie the game. Phoenix College was not able to score on the following possession and CGCC was able to regain possession resulting in Phoenix College having to foul, putting Julianna Horne to the line who hit one free throw, giving CGCC a 47-46 lead. The toughness of the young Coyote team pulled through as they got the one defensive stop they needed all game and went home victorious.

Horne lead the Coyotes with 12 points. Both basketball teams travel to Scottsdale College for another big inter-conference matchup with the Fighting Artichokes Tuesday night.
