Coyote Athletics Year in Review
May 16, 2023

Chandler, AZ-- The 2022-2023 academic year was an incredible year for Coyote Athletics. Out of the seven team sports, six of them qualified for postseason play. Not including one Women's golfer in Kaylin Johnson who represented CGCC as an individual at the NJCAA National Championship tournament.

Our Men's soccer team, opened their season with a win over Gateway and despite winning their final regular season game of the year, they finished with a record of 4-10. The Men's Soccer team is in a reloading process and will certainly be a force to be reckoned with in the ACCAC soon.

The Women's Soccer team, with Scott Smith at the helm for his first full year, went 8-8 and made the playoffs where they lost a close 1-0 match to eventual National Champion, Phoenix College.

Also throughout the Fall, the Volleyball team was amongst the top 15 ranked teams in the country and went 15-7 only losing to other opponents ranked within the top five nationally. They too made the playoffs and lost to Scottsdale CC in the Region 1 Final.

Basketball season saw improvement from both the Men's and Women's team as the Women's Basketball squad won 10 games and made the playoffs for the first time since 2017. The Men's Basketball season was one of many highlights as Head Coach Steve Silsby won his 100th game as a Coyote, and the team set a program record for wins with 21 on the season.

As the calendar turned to April and May, the Softball teams mid-season victory over Glendale College marked Head Coach Bry Norris' 100th win as a Coyote as well. The softball team made the playoffs with their 20 win season but lost to South Mountain Community College in the first round.

The Spring season came to a close with the Yote Baseball team winning 33 games and earning the right to host a playoff game. However, it saw them losing the best 2-out-of-3 series to Glendale College in the Region 1 Championship. A strong feat, this was the second consecutive year the Yote baseball team made it to the Region 1 Championship.

In an interesting statistic, every Coyote team that made the playoffs lost to the eventual conference champion and to the team that would represent our conference in the National Tournament. Including our Volleyball and Women's Soccer team who lost to the teams that would play in the NJCAA National Championship.

CGCC Athletics in the 2022-2023 academic year produced 11 ACCAC Players of the Week, 18 All-ACCAC or Region 1 nominations, one Libero of the Year and one Division II First-Team All-American.

A multitude of Coyote student athletes will be signing letters of intent to continue their playing careers at the 4-year university level on athletic scholarships.

Our department would not have had the success it achieved without strong support from our administration as well as the unsung heroes of the department like Athletic Trainers Ric Moreno and Lyndsey Gough and our strength and conditioning coach, Adam Wagner. Plus, the super woman work of Ethne Cox, our departments administrative aid.

We are expecting big things in the 2023-2024 so stay tuned for so much more to come!
